Turning Negatives Into Positives

As a child, I remember that my mother would become frustrated with me because I had difficulty focusing on my schoolwork. I became distracted easily.  Later on, I had difficulty reading long novels and history books because they were laborious to me. A short attention span caused me to lose interest in the subject matter quickly and my mind began to wander to other ideas.  I noticed later in my teen years that I had difficulty heeding the long-term consequences of my immediate actions. I would procrastinate with things that would sometimes lead to negative effects on my grades.  I was more interested in the “entertaining” parts of life than I was on the long-term effects and how this would affect my success or lack of success in the future.  All of these traits had their consequences and I wish that my parents had sought some type of counseling or leadership for me that would have helped me to deal with these issues early on in my life.  School and life in general could have been very different for me if my parents had known this and found help for me during the formative years of my life.

Only after coming to work at Leadership Development Co. and taking aptitude and personality testing which is a part of the Life & Career Planning process, did I realize that I had several traits that negatively affected me and my potential successes.  I also realized that if I had had some help with these, and I had learned to “See Myself” I could have learned to redirect these negative traits into positive qualities instead.

“Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”  ~ Albert Einstein

I do not know if I have ADD or ADHD because I was never tested for these disorders, but I do have many of the same traits that occur in this these disorders.

  • Impulsivity

  • Difficulty focusing

  • Problems heeding the long-term consequences of immediate actions

“All of these can have profound effects on success in many areas of life.”

Some of the most creative, enthusiastic, and intuitive individuals have or had these same traits and throughout history we can read stories of how they used these negative traits for profoundly positive success.  Some examples are:  Thomas Edison/Inventor, Michael Phelps/Swimmer, Will Smith/Actor, Glenn Beck/ Commentator, Bill Gates/ Entrepreneur, just to name a few.  These people have found ways to redirect the negative traits to bring them profound success instead.

At Leadership Development Company in our Life & Career Planning process we focus on the individual and their goals so that we may assist them in finding success and happiness in their lives.
